We are a church in mission! Mission opportunities are available for children, women, and men of all ages! We believe passionately that Christ calls us to reach out to the disadvantaged and help in every way we possibly can. Both Rev. Smith and Rev. McKnigth lead mission outreach efforts within the community and beyond our community. In addition to our hands-on efforts, some noted below, we commit funds to key community agencies such as Angels Clinic, Youth Center, Needline, Boy Scouts, Gentry House, etc. Jesus reminded us, "As you've done for the least of these my brothers and sisters, you've done for me." We take that call and that challenge seriously! KIDS IN MISSION The children of First United Methodist Church participate in several mission projects throughout the year. His Kids (K-3rd grade) collect items for the Operation Christmas Child shoebox ministry each October. The Faith Place (4th & 5th grade) members join together each semester for a different community service project. Kids of all ages have made and delivered pillow cases to the Murray-Calloway County Hospital Pediatric Unit. They also visit long-term care patients each February with Valentines that they have made and to share their musical talents. Join us as we learn to serve God by serving others!
SUMMER YOUTH MISSION TRIP All youth in 8th - 12th grade are invited to share their faith during a week-long mission experience each summer. While on work sites, our youth have painted, made repairs, held VBS for children, played games with the elderly, and more! Our youth have traveled to South Dakota, Alabama, Massacheusetts, Florida, and ventured to Denver, Colorado in 2004.
LOCAL MISSIONS It's not hard to find one of our church members out in the community helping others! Our church members volunteer in so many ways: Angel's Attic, Angel's Community Clinic, Needline, Character Counts, and more. First United Methodist Church is also proud to work with Women Aware to provide emergency housing at our Gateway House for battered women and their families. We also support agencies such as Mountain Missions, Reelfoot Rural Ministries, and Lakeshore United Methodist Assembly. INTERNATIONAL MISSION TEAM First United Methodist Church is proud to be a part of the International Medical Mission team. Around 30 youth and adults from the Murray community travel each summer to Central America. While there, they not only perform much-needed medical services, but they also provide both children and adults with items such as clothing, shoes, and eyeglasses. |
