Sew-A-Thon

For years, our church has sent teams of people under the leadership of the Baptist Medical and Dental Mission international organization to the rural areas of Nicaragua. The people who went on these interdenominational teams saw a real need for cloth diapers and shoes. So each year we asked each member of Murray First to purchase a pair of sneakers and a dozen cloth diapers to be shipped to Nicaragua. These teams also saw a serious need for clothing the children with whom they came in contact. Then an idea developed. What if we were able to make a simple pattern of girl’s dresses in different sizes and a simple pattern of boy’s shorts in different sizes and ship them to Nicaragua so our team could distribute them with the shoes and diapers. So the Sew-A-Thon was born. It  has now exploded into a multi-state, multidenominational effort with hundreds of skirts and shorts being made from donated material.

Appalachian Project

For the last 7 years, this regional mission project has been a coalition of a local Baptist car dealer, who has loaned us a van to use for our equipment, a talented team of carpenters painters and willing “gophers” from FUMC and  the coordination effort of the Catholic St. Vincent’s Mission in David Kentucky. This mission effort involves extensive painting and rebuilding of substandard housing in Eastern Kentucky. The team works under the direction of Sister Katherine and stays at the St. Vincent mission on Thursday night, Friday night and Saturday night. The team returns to Murray on Sunday afternoon.

Church-wide Picnic

Due to inclement weather, the church-wide picnic was held indoors in our gymnasium. Bean bag games and good food and fellowship was the order of the day. A good time was had by all.
